Obeying Our Parents

Why Should We Obey our Parents?
This is one question I mean to address through this article. First off, let me just set the stage for my hub. This Valentine's my father and I attended a father/daughter dinner and had a fun evening with friends from church.
The Point of this Father/Daughter Dinner?
To have a fun time, learn our roles and how we relate to each other, how we can be godly daughters and how our fathers can nurture their daughters. I think the evening was a success--lots of fun games and fellowship balanced with biblical instruction and advice straight from God's Word.
Since I was one of the older daughters present, I had been asked to share what godly daughters' lives should look like. This hub is simply the advice I shared with the other daughters at the dinner.
Does God Say We Should Obey Our Parents?
In the Bible, the word 'obey' is mentioned hundreds of times. Obviously, obedience is important to God. Therefore, it should also be important to us.
Throughout the Bible, God tells children to obey their parents. In Exodus, He says: “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you.” (20:12)
What exactly does it mean to honor our parents? Honoring our parents means treating them with respect, distinction and love. We are to love, cherish, trust, obey and respect our parents with a cheerful heart that wants to obey. In other words, we honor our parents by obeying them.
When Jesus was a child he obeyed his earthly parents, Joseph & Mary. By obeying them, he obeyed and pleased God. In Luke, we are told that “[Jesus] went down with [his parents] and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them.” (2:51)

Vision Forum's retreat is what inspired our church to have these Valentine dinners. I have never been to Vision Forum's retreats, but understand they are awesome.
Being a Daughter of the King of Kings
As daughters, God has a wonderful plan for us. Right now, our fathers (and mothers) protect, guide and teach us. When we are older, our fathers will give each of us in marriage to a man who will love, guide, protect and teach us. We will always be under the authority of a man; right now that is our fathers and later it will be our husbands.
Just like a godly wife will submit to her husband, so we will submit and obey our father and mother now. Our fathers are wise and truly want the best for us. In Proverbs, God tells us, “Listen to your father” (Prov. 22:23).
In Colossians, God commands, “Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord .“ (3:20) This verse tells us that our obedience pleases God. In other words, when we obey our parents, God is happy. If our mom or dad asks us to set the table for dinner, when we obey quickly and with a cheerful heart, God is pleased. By obeying our parents, we are serving and obeying God, too.

Very well written! I do believe that obedience is demonstrating our belief in what God says is true! It's an exercise of faith to walk as He tells us to walk; showing we put our trust in His ways rather than the ways of the world. "Without faith it is impossible to please God." and "we please Him by having faith."
Thank you for reminding us all that obedience is a thing of beauty and not a burden to bear. Blessings to you and your beautiful family!!
